The Green Kitchen

They say the heart of every home is the kitchen, and this may certainly be true. However, kitchens are also one of the highest energy consuming areas of the house and for anybody wanting to reduce their electricity or gas bills; or just keen to help the environment, the kitchen is the best place to start.

For an eco kitchen, energy consumption needs to be reduced. Energy consumption in the kitchen is really high because of the tasks and appliances we use in there and they also have other environmentally damaging effects too. For instance, when it comes to washing clothes, not only washing machine and tumble dryers use lots of electricity and water, the detergents and fabric softeners we put in the water have an effect on the environment too.

Eco balls can replace detergents and will not only clean clothes without detergents, they can be reused so you save on expensive washing powders and liquids too. And instead of using the tumble dryer, why not revert to a clothes airer to dry your clothes the natural way.

Often a lot of energy is wasted when cooking too. Overfilling pans means it takes more water to heat the water as does using multiple pots when only one or two would suffice. Think of some of the great tasting meals that can are conjured up by Chinese cooks in a wok - they use very little energy to cook food.

The kitchen is a good place to start with the recycling too. Food waste can be composted, even if you don;t have a garden or room for a composter, small kitchen composters are available. And a good recycling bin is essential to separate all your waste.

By cutting down on energy consumption in our kitchens we could dramatically reduce our household bills and our overall carbon footprint going a log way to help the environment.
